Discussion: New Year’s Sermon “Pick A Fight”

Picking a fight?  In light of Mike’s sermon on New Year’s Day, if you were fully equipped and could go anywhere in the world to effect a change, where would it be?  Or maybe where isn’t  the question, but for whom?  In what culture?  For what cause?  Based on your passions, your gifts and your journey, where or how would you get involved globally in sharing the gospel through justice and compassion?

  1. I think all those things are “where”. Where is people, causes, ministry & gifting! I thought Mike’s sermon was awesome. Just what we needed at the beginning of a new year.
Where would I go? What would I do? I would stay where I am doing the things I have been equipped to do and help others be right where God wants them to be.
Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world (2nd to oil). I think there is a lot for good that can be done through that medium. A lot for good and the Gospel. I am part of several networks where injustice, poverty, evangelism and church planting are being addressed through how we deal with coffee (farmers, importing process, roasting and selling to the customer). That’s something that get’s my attention.
I am looking forward to see what others have to say!

I really want to go to India, I’m not sure where the idea came from but all I can think about lately is going there.

Corey, there are a number of excellent ministries that do work in India. I have been on short term mission work with Operation Mobilization India and their work with the uncasted through Dalit Freedom Network. If God is putting it on your heart to find out more, I would be glad to point you in the direction of some contacts there!

Haiti has really touched my heart. I do not know if that is because it was my first mission trip or not. My prayer is that God arranges things so I can get back there this summer!

Copied from the original “Discussion:” above, this is the question that really GETS me … Or maybe where isn’t the question, but for whom?
“WHOM” for me, is “the least of these” (Matthew 25: 34-45). Anyone who is forgotten by society … in whatever culture, near or far. People without HOPE. That’s where my passion lies – – to let people know that they can have HOPE in Jesus & that God has not forgotten them. People like this are all around us. I am so impressed & overwhelmed when brothers & sisters in Christ are called to foreign missions! I can’t think of anything more courageous. But for me … my fight is local. The homeless in Baltimore City. Women working through addiction recovery in Carroll County. All the stuff that has always scared me to death 🙂 But that’s how we know it’s GOD, right? If I could do it on my own, what would I need Him for?? He’s still narrowing my focus & I’m excited to see which prize fights He’s working on promoting for 2012!
